Morrow wondered if he might soon die because of a beautiful girl from his teens he'd never had the nerve to approach. This thought preoccupied him as he collected fees from campers at dusk and watched shadows on the hillsides for odd patterns, shifty movements, studied parked cars he wasn't sure he recognized, or looked into new faces for any intimation of treachery.
It's been a while since I've done a required reading post, so why not? It's a sleepless night. Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter's Bone - the film version of which went off to be nominated for four 2011 Academy Awards - and Tomato Red, lends a short story to Esquire - featured in the April 2011 issue, or can be downloaded here.
Jyg and I attempted to watch Winter's Bone last Saturday, but failed. It's not the sort of movie you watch when you're batteries are running low. After reading "Twin Forks," however, I'm probably going to give the novel a crack before I attempt to watch the film.
Oh well, until next time - keep on huntin'.
